The estimated processing time for a visa application is 
four (4) business days.

 
Every document in a language different of Spanish MUST BE  translated and notarized and with the seal of apostille.

 
It is discretionary of the Government of Colombia, based on the principle of sovereignty, to authorize the entrance and the permanence of foreigners in the national territory.

 

 


 
The validity of the visa begins as soon as the visa is issued, and it will end in any of the following cases:
 

 

  1. - Expiration of the visa.
  2. - By an order of a Colombian legal authority.   
  3. - When the holder of a Temporal Visa remains out of Colombia for a period of up to  one hundred eighty (180) continuous days.
  4. - When the holder of a Resident visa remains out of Colombia for  a period of up to  two (2continuous years.
  5. - By a written request from the visa holder.
  6. - By deportation or expulsion of the visa holder.
  7. - When there is any evidence of fraudulent acts committed by the holder of   the visa
  8. - When a error is made by the competent authority and the issue of   the visa does not fulfill all the legal  requirements.   


 

 
The visa can be canceled when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in exercise of its discretionary sovereignty competence determines it.   
 
A foreign citizen whose visa has been revoked or canceled, will not be able to apply for a new visa in a period of ONE (1) YEAR after the cancellation date.

 
It is also important to keep in mind that granting any type of visa does not guarantee the entrance to the national territory.

 


 

 
COLOMBIAN VISA REQUIREMENTS

 

 
The visa application must be submitted directly by the foreign citizen or by the entity or company where the applicant works or that is sponsoring him. 

 
In the case of artistic, sport or cultural groups the paperwork can be signed by the person who entered into the contract as the legal representative of these groups.

 
The request for the visa must comply with all the requirements established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

 
Any discrepancy in the information submitted by the person requesting the visa may cause the denial, cancellation or no admission into the national territory.

 
All documents that are not in Spanish must be translated and certificated (Apostille).

 

 
Children with Colombian parents have the right to obtain the Colombian citizenship and can not apply for visa to enter into the national territory.

COURTESY VISA

 
The Courtesy visa can be issue by the Internal Work Group established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and it can last for a period ONE (1) YEAR, and by the Diplomatic Missions and/or Consulate Offices of the Republic for a period of NINETY (90) days to the foreign person, that seeks to enter multiple times to the national territory, in the following cases:

 

  1. To public-know persons due to their contributions in the intellectual, cultural, academic, scientific, political, social, commercial environment, or when the Colombian Government determines it convenient for the Colombian Estate. 
  2. To the foreign citizen that pretends to enter the national territory as part of an exchange program or activity related to the last item, and that are being sponsored by an entity or public/private institutions.
  3. To the government employees, experts, technician, or employees of international organizations.
  4. To the foreign spouse or common-law marriage (unión marital de hecho), and close relatives of a Colombian Government employee working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  5. To the foreign citizen of a country with a valid Treaty with Colombia pursuing  the immigration of businessman, legal representatives, company directives, executives or any person who will stimulates the commercial relationship between the countries.
  6.  To the foreign professionals and technicians planning to do an internship. To students, interns, professors, languages assistants.
  7. To the foreign person carrying a diplomatic passport entering the country in a temporary way to perform duties different of the diplomatic ones. 
     

The holder of a courtesy visa can request another type of visa, while in the national territory, as long as the individual fulfill all the requirements for the new type of visa.

 

 

 

 

 
BUSINESS VISA

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that applies for a Business visa must include one of the following requisites:

 

  1. A letter from the legal representative of the company accrediting the foreign person, establishing the kind of activity that this person is going to perform. Or, 
     

      2. A letter from the public or private entity within the national territory that promote the visit             of the foreign citizen, stating that the company is responsible for  of this person while is in the country.  Or, 

    3. A letter from the legal representative of the foreign sponsoring corporation or business      requesting the visa and this letter has to be properly authenticated by the Consulate of Colombia.

 
    The documents must be notarized and with the seal of apostille.

CREW MEMBER VISA 
 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a Crew Member visa must include the fallowing requisites: 

 

  1. A letter from the legal representative responsible of the international means of transportation or fishing vessel, depending the case, stating the activity to perform and what  makes him/her responsible  for the permanence and departure of the foreign person in the national territory.
  2. Certificate of existence and legal representation of the company.
  3. Note of the company responsible of the fishing vessel , according the case, which express that it complies with all the regulations established for hiring international crew members.  In this case company must give proof that it has informed about the particular to the competent maritime authority  . 
  4. The corresponding permits to exercise this activity.

     



 
WORKING VISA 
 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a WORKING visa must include the fallowing requisites:

 

  1. Present the original contract, administrative act, or enrollment agreement, whichever the case, when the foreign employee is hired by a company, entity, or private or public institution. In the case that the foreign employee is moved from the head quarters to a subsidiary or agency in Colombia, he/she must present a note or letter from the company specifying the position to perform in the national territory. 
  2. The foreign employee must present a note or letter from the company, entity, or private or public institution stating that it will cover all the expenses in the case the foreign employee must return to his/her home country or last country of residence, due to termination of contract, cancellation of the visa, deportation or expulsion of the individual from the national territory.
  3. Certificate of incorporation and legal representation issued within a maximum precedence of 3 months.
  4. Certificate of Proportionality issued by the Ministry of Work and Social Security. This document proves that according to Colombian labor legislation, the corporation of the foreign worker will abide with laws regarding ratios of foreigners and locals within the company.
  5. Proof of experience, diplomas, licenses or certificates that indicate that the foreigner is suitable for the position. 
     



 

 
TEMPORARY VISAS

 
Spouse or permanent partner of a Colombian citizen 
 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a SPOUSE Visa must include the following requisites:

 

  1. Authenticated copy of the Colombian Marriage Certificate. Issued date no longer than 90 days.
  2. Written application of the Colombian spouse requesting the issue of the visa for the foreigner. It must be either notarized in Colombia or notarized and Apostille in the United States.
  3. Authenticated copy of the Colombian spouse’s ID (cédula de ciudadanía). It must be notarized. 
     

The owner of this type of visa will have as occupation or profession HOUSEWIFE /HUSBAND or STUDENT. In the case that the individual wants to perform a different activity, corroborating documentation is required. Any foreign documentation must be properly authenticated or apostilled.

Requirements to accredit a different profession from HOUSEWIFE/HUSBAND or STUDENT:

Employee:

 

  1. Working contract
  2. Certificate of Proportionality issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. This document proves that according to Colombian labor legislation, the corporation of the foreign worker will abide with the laws regarding ratios of foreigners and locals within the company.
  3. Proof of experience, diplomas, licenses or certificates that indicate that the foreign individual is suitable for the position. 
     

Merchant:

 

  1. Certificate of the chamber of commerce proving that the foreign individual is partner or owner of the commercial establishment issued  no longer than THREE (3) MONTHS. 
     

Independent: 

 

  1. Letter submitted by the foreign individual stating and proving the activity to perform while in the country. 
     

Retire People or Pensioners

 

  1. Documentation that proves the periodic payment or assignment of a pension.




 

 
Parents (MOTHER/FATHER)of a Colombian Citizen

 

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a PARENT visa must include the fallowing requisites:

 

  1. Birth Certificate of the Colombian child issued  no longer than NINETY (90) DAYS.
  2. Letter from the Colombian parent stating who is economically responsible for the child, or a letter from the child requesting the visa once he/she reaches the legal age.
  3. Authenticated photocopy of the parent's I.D (cedula de ciudadania) or alien card, whichever the case. 
     



 

 
  Visa for a Religious Order Member Visa

 

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that applies for a Church Member/ Member of a Religious Order Visa must include the following requisites:

 

  1. Certificate from the Ministry of Justice or the Archdiocese, depending the case, that state that the church, confession or religious denomination or its federations, confederations, and associations of ministers, which are properly register.
  2. Certificate from the legal representative or superior of the Community, which specify the mission that the foreign individual will perform and also stating the relationship with the religious entity.
  3. Certificate of the legal representative or superior of the Community; in which it compromises with the Colombian government to cover all the expenses in the case the foreign individual must return to his/her home country or last country of residence, due to no longer being part of the religious community, cancellation of the visa, deportation or expulsion of the individual from the national territory.

     


    
Student Visa

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a STUDENT Visa must include the following requisites:

 

  1. Photocopy of the certificate of admission or enrollment issued by the academic institution, or an authentic photocopy of the agreement between the sponsoring entity and the academic institution stating that the foreign student is accepted under this inter- institutional agreement. 
  2. Photocopy of the certificate of incorporation of the academic institution issued by the competent authority.
  3. Documentation proving the sufficient funds of the foreign student, his parents, legal representative or the sponsor who will take care of all the economic responsabilities within the country.
  4. Certification of any scholarship given by an international entity.
  5. Authorization of the parents allowing the permanence of the minor in the country and designating a person responsible for the minor while in the country.
  6. Document requiring an internship as part of the study program as an academic requisite.
  7. Certification of the academic establishment stating that the intensity of the program will not be less that TEN (10) hours per week. 

 
 


 
Refugee Visa

In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a REFUGEE Visa must include the photocopy of the Resolution from the Ministry of Foreing Affairs that recognized the condition of such.

 


 

 
TEMPORARY SPECIAL VISAS

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a TEMPORARY SPECIAL VISA must include the fallowing documents depending on the category of the visa:

Visa for medical treatment:

 

  1. Certificate issued by the Doctor confirming the necessity of the treatment and its length. It must be approved by the medical institution and notarized in Colombia.
  2. Documents that prove the sufficient funds available to pay for the treatment and the permanence in the country.
  3. Copy of the reservation of the round trip tickets. 
     

Visa to Intervene in a Judicial Process:

 

  1. Certification issued by the competent activity that shows the type of process and if the foreign individual is involve, is part, interested third party, or incidental third party in this process.
  2. Documents that prove the sufficient funds available for the duration of the process and the permanence in the country.
  3. Photocopy of the round way ticket.
     


Visa for a partner or owner of a commercial establishment
 

 

  1. Certificate of incorporation issued by the Chamber of Commerce issued no longer than NINETY (90) DAYS.
  2. Company's bank statements signed by the certified public accountant, and a copy of his accountant license.
  3. Authenticated copy of the last Income Tax Return of the company.
  4. Police background report. It must be translated into Spanish, notarized and Apostille.


 
Visa for Retirees:

 

  1. Certification issued by the competent authority, Government, public or private company, or Colombian or foreign entity proving the payment of the pension. In the case of a pension coming from other country, it must be legalized by the Colombian Consul or Apostilled, depending the case.
     


 
Visa for Renters:

 

  1. Proof from the official entity, banks, financial institutions, private or public companies, social security institutions, insurance companies or any other private institution recognized by the respective Government that pays or draw the income, or the original of the contract properly authenticated, that allows to corroborate the amount of the income not less than TEN (10) minimum legal salaries.
  2. Every document in a language different of Spanish MUST BE  translated and notarized and with the seal of apostille.



 
Visas for Adoption Processes:

 

  1. Photocopy of the proof of the assignation of the minor to the adoptive family issued by the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar -ICBF-, or the respective center of adoption.
  2. Photocopy of the certificate of incorporation of the Colombian adoption center. When the process is submitted trough the ICBF, there is not need for this requisite.
  3. Letter from the adoptive parents requesting the adoption process.
  4. Photocopy of the round trip ticket.

     




 
RESIDENT VISA AS A RELATIVE OF A COLOMBIAN CITIZEN

In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen that apply for a RESIDENT Visa as RELATIVE of a Colombian citizen, must include the photocopy of the proof of the resignation to the Colombian citizenship.

In order to validate the profession, the foreign individual must present the documents specifying the activity to perform in Colombia, as an independent worker or belonging to a public or private entity.
 
 


 
QUALIFIED RESIDENT VISA

In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen applying for a QUALIFIED Visa must include the following requisites:


 

  1. Certificate of migratory movement issued by the Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad -DAS- no longer than THIRTY (30) DAYS.
  2. Documents that demonstrate what kind of activity the foreign individual is going to perform in Colombia, as an independent worker or belonging to a public or private entity, and in the second case the person must present his working contract or any document that prove his qualities for the job to perform.
  3. Certificate of judicial background issued by the competent authority no longer than SIX (6) MONTHS, excepting persons under 18 years old or over 65 years old.

 
 


 
RESIDENT INVESTOR VISA

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen applying for a RESIDENT INVESTOR Visa must include the following requisites:

 

  1. Proof issued by the Exchange Department of the Bank of the Republic which shows that in the database there is a registry of the foreign investment, under the name of the foreign individual  who is requesting the visa, for an amount of ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND ($100.000.00) American dollars, as a minimum amount to invest in Colombia.

     



 
VISITOR VISA

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen applying for a VISITOR Visa must include, depending on the category, the following requisites:

Tourist Visitor:

 

  1. Documents that prove the economic capacity to pay for the p  in the country.
  2. Photocopy of the round trip ticket. 
     

Technical Visitor:

 

  1. Letter from the responsible entity stating the urgency of the required service.
  2. Certificate of incorporation and legal representation issued by the requesting entity.
  3. Photocopy of the round trip ticket 
     

Temporary Visitor:

 

  1. Documents that specify the type of activity to perform while in the country.
  2. Documents that prove the economic capacity to pay for the activities to perform while in the country.
  3. Photocopy of the round trip ticket. 
     



 
BENEFICIARY VISA

 
In addition to all the general requirements, the foreign citizen applying for a BENEFICIARY Visa must include the following requisites:

 

  1. Civil registry or other document properly legalized or Apostilled  that shows the relationship.
  2. Proof of economic dependence.
  3. Letter from the holder of the visa making him/her responsible of  the Beneficiary and his/her departure.
  4. Photocopy of the holder's visa.

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

 

  1. The length of stay granted to travelers is determined by the Colombian immigration officer [DAS immigration officers] at the point of entry and will be stamped in your passport.  
  2. Extensions may be requested by the foreigner visiting an office of the Colombian immigration authority, known as the Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad, or DAS, after arrival in Colombia.  
  3. Fines are enforced if a traveler remains in Colombia longer than authorized, and the traveler cannot leave Colombia until the fine is paid.  
  4. Any traveler possessing a Colombian visa with more than three months’ validity must register the visa at a DAS immigration office within 15 days of arrival in Colombia or face fines.  
  5. The DAS immigration office in Bogota is located at Calle 100 and Carrera 11B.  For other cities, please check the website http://www.das.gov.co. 
  6. For all the Cuban passport holders, please be sure to bring the passport with the necessary  extensions that have to be done every TWO (2) YEARS.
